Santa Cruz is a coastal city in California on Monterey Bay, known for its beaches, surf culture and the redwood forests nearby. The weather is mild all year: summers are warm with morning fog, winters (December to February) are cool and wet, and spring and autumn are the sunniest. Spring to autumn is the best time to race, with a cool ocean. It is about an hour and a half by road from San Francisco and San Jose.
