Welcome to the Swamp Fox Ultra under management of Palmetto Ultras. Embark on a truly unparalleled trail racing experience, as our event is the only trail race (that we know of at least) that spans across the entire Francis Marion National Forest.
While I do love a good looped course with the convenience of having gear and nutrition close at hand (and we offer a few of those), this race demands a bit more strategic planning to ensure you're well-equipped throughout. Once the sun sets the trail takes on a whole new feel.
My goal is simple: to see every participant cross the finish line, and I'm committed to providing the necessary support to make that happen. Our race is TRAIL SISTERS and ATRA approved.
There will be 4 aid stations and 3 water drops along the out and back course. You will hit each aid station on your course, except the turnaround, twice.
You can still have drop bags at the aid stations. Bags are gathered at the start/finish line and transported to the appropriate aid station as aid stations close. You can either go to the aid station to get your bag after the race, or pick it up at the start/finish line.
Everyone who finishes the distance they registered for will get a medal. 100 mile finishers will get a custom made buckle. Top 3 male and female finishers for each distance will also get an award.
You will start in McClellanville at Buck Hall Recreation Area. Look for the overflow parking area and head to the very back. Planned renovations at Buck Hall Rec Area mean the race may have to start and finish somewhere else, and aid stations may be in different places than the course map shows.
Pacers can join at the turnaround for the 100 milers and at the last aid station for the 50 milers. Crew can provide aid, drop bags and more at any aid station. It is highly recommended to have at least one crew member, especially for the 100 miler.
Aid station volunteers are not responsible for driving you back to the start/finish line if you drop out at any point. Runners have suggested a shuttle, but this race caps at 200 runners and the number of DNFs does not warrant a shuttle service. Please don't come into the race relying on that.
Follow My Challenge USA provides tracking for the 100 mile runners, included with your registration. 50 milers have the option to purchase tracking for $40. You'll receive a small tracking device to carry at all times during the race, and a link to share with family, friends and crew.
The Swamp Fox Ultra is part of the Swamp Series, which includes all 3 races in the Francis Marion Forest: Frozen, Swamp Fox and Hell Hole. Run any distance at all 3 races. The runner who accumulates the most miles at all 3 races will be crowned King or Queen of the swamp, with male and female winners.
Ties for distance go to the runner who completed the most miles in the fastest time. When you register for all 3 races, select 'swamp series' on the page with additional questions.
In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.) The Swamp Fox Ultra is operated under special use permit with the Francis Marion National Forest.
100 milers must carry the following gear at all times during the race. Gear will be checked at the start/finish line on the morning of the race.
It is highly recommended to carry at least 1.5L fluid when you leave any aid station. Anyone leaving Halfway Creek Aid Station (aid station 1) by or after 4pm will be required to have a head or waist lamp.
50 and 100 milers are required to have a light once it gets dark out, such as a headlamp, waist light or flaming torch. Phone lights don't count. Bring a spare light, batteries and charging cables. 50 milers will be asked to show their light if leaving Halfway Creek Aid Station by or after 4pm.
Per our insurance policy, dogs are not allowed on the course during the race.
The race takes place rain or shine. There are no refunds, credits or deferrals. Bib transfer via ultrasignup is allowed until Tuesday of race week, and race insurance can be purchased on ultrasignup. Pregnancy and postpartum 1 year deferral is offered.
The course runs across the entire Francis Marion National Forest on Palmetto Trail passages. Each distance runs out and back to its own clearly marked turnaround and returns to the start/finish line. The course is very flat and runnable, mostly single and double track trails with some fire road sections and a few boardwalks. The trail is mostly shaded, and there may be water on the course depending on the weather.
The course will be marked well with flagging and signage. The Swamp Fox Trail is marked with white blazes, and from about mile 6 you will follow the white blazes and mile markers for the Swamp Fox Trail the entire time.
It is your responsibility to know where you're going. Download the map to your watch or phone using an app like AllTrails that allows offline navigation, as service isn't great in some sections. The course GPX file will be made available in the Runners Guide.
Distances are not always exact, and runners have different watches. These courses are not USATF certified.
McClellanville is a community in South Carolina, USA. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild, so spring and autumn are the best seasons to race.
