About the race
And now for something totally different! In our 16th year, the "McClassic" is transformed into The Wild Steelhead.
I have been toiling hard on this one for a few years and I am as excited as I have ever been for a race.
Crews, pacers and muling
- Pacers from about halfway can mule your kit.
- There will be fairly long stretches between aid stations, so a crew and pacers are recommended.
- Crew zones may be used, like Mogollon Monster does, where crew use pullouts along forest roads to render aid. This decreases congestion at trailheads.
- All crew spots will be along Goose Lake Road, the main artery running north to south along the course.
Transport and getting to the start
- We are arranging bus transport from Titus Lot to the starting line.
- You may also have crew drop you off at the start.
- The 35K needs a ride from the finish at Cleyburn Trailhead back to McCall or to your vehicle at Titus Lot.
- It is a 60 minute/24 mile forest road drive from Titus Lot to Cleyburn Trailhead.
Crew requirement
Crew
- We are considering making a crew mandatory unless you have long ultras in your resume.
- We will clarify the requirements soon.
The course
105K35K
The Wild Steelhead is a one-way race from Riggins to McCall, ID. The main event is a 105K, planned to start at Island Bar near Riggins and finish at Gordon Tiitus Lot near McCall. A shorter 35K one-way race runs from Island Bar to Cleyburn Trailhead concurrently with the 105K. The course details are still being finalised with the land managers.
105K course and aid stations
- The 105K plans for 4 aid stations (3 of those allow crew) and a few water stations.
- The first 22 miles will only have a water station.
- The principal climbs are a 7,000 footer at the start and a 5,000 footer late in the race, plus some smaller rollers along the way.
- Around 15-16,000 climb and 11,000 descent.
35K course
- One-way from Island Bar to Cleyburn Trailhead, running concurrently with the 105K.
- About 7000 climb and 1000' of descent.
- Thankfully, it might be the best 22 miles on Earth.
Conditions and what to carry
- Plan on carrying a mini flask filter and lots of calories.
- There will be lots of water flowing in July in the mountains.
Location
City insight: Mccall
McCall is a city in Idaho, USA. Its mountain climate has cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers, so late spring through early autumn are the best seasons to race.
