Houston is the largest city in Texas, in the southeast of the state near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, on a flat gulf coastal plain. The climate is humid subtropical: summers (June to September) are hot, with most days at or above 32 C and summer mornings averaging over 90% humidity, while winters are mild with occasional cold spells. Late autumn to early spring is the best time to race. In summer, expect heat and heavy humidity, so start early and hydrate well. It is about 165 miles east of Austin and 250 miles south of Dallas, and is a very car-oriented city.
